Whale and Dolphin Encounters

Back to "Tours"

The curious Humpback

Just off a rocky coast, a broad whale’s tail arcs elegantly out of the ocean, hangs for an instant above the waves, then slides into the depths. The scene soon repeats itself, as the great creature again breaks the surface to take another breath, exhaling a misty spout through a blowhole atop its head, then quickly fills its lungs again.

Large, measuring 11.5 – 15 meters long. The dorsal area is black with white throat and chest. The pectoral dins are extremely reduced and is positioned on the hump.

Found in all the world’s oceans, from tropical seas to polar waters. In Costa Rica it has been observed all along the Pacific coast (Uvita) and islands (El Caño) This species prefers shallow waters and costal areas, but may swim out to the open sea when it migrates.

In the summer it feeds in the polar regions, returning to the warm waters in winter. Humpback Whale come to our beaches to birth their babies. It is acrobatic and interacts whit bottlenose dolphins. It is generally observed in groups of 1 – 3 individuals but dozens of individuals may congregate in feeding areas.

Note: The boat will pick you up at our lodge after breakfast and takes you out on the ocean. This is a full day tour, you will have lunch and refreshments at the boat and come back in the afternoon.
